What are GTA 5 cheats and how do they work?

GTA 5 cheats are built-in codes that change Story Mode on the fly: invincibility, a full weapon loadout, explosive bullets, moon gravity, a Buzzard attack chopper dropped next to you. Rockstar shipped them on every version of Grand Theft Auto V, from the original PS3 and Xbox 360 release in 2013 through PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Every cheat comes in up to three flavors:

• Button combo: a sequence of face buttons, shoulder buttons and d-pad directions entered on a PlayStation or Xbox controller.
• PC console word: a single word like TOOLUP typed into the cheat console.
• Phone number: a 1-999 number dialed on the character’s in-game phone.

They all trigger the same effect. Pick whichever is fastest for your setup.

Console button combos

1. Load into Story Mode and make sure you’re in normal gameplay, not a menu or cutscene.
2. Input the sequence briskly and in order. Use the d-pad for directions, not the analog stick.
3. Watch for the “cheat activated” confirmation. No message means a missed press, so start over.

PC console

1. Press the tilde key (~). On most keyboards it’s the key directly under Esc, left of 1, though the symbol printed on it varies by layout.
2. Type the cheat word. It is not case-sensitive.
3. Press Enter to activate it.

Phone

1. Bring up the phone (d-pad Up on a controller, Up arrow on PC).
2. Open the keypad from the Contacts app and dial the full number, including the 1-999 prefix.
3. Hit call. The cheat fires immediately.

The power move is TOOLUP, then HIGHEX, then DEADEYE. You get a full arsenal, every round explodes, and you have the time to place each one. Keep TURTLE on speed dial for the moment invincibility runs out, because PAINKILLER is timed and the end of it tends to arrive at the worst possible moment, usually mid-fall from a rooftop.

Best cheats for escaping the police

Lower Wanted Level (LAWYERUP, 1-999-5299-3787) removes one star per entry. A five-star chase takes five entries, which is exactly why the phone or the PC console beats a ten-button combo here. If you want a bigger fight instead, Raise Wanted Level (FUGITIVE) adds a star per entry. Pair it with Invincibility and Explosive Ammo for a satisfying last stand.

Best cheats for pure chaos

• Moon Gravity (FLOATER): cars launch off ramps and crash into orbit-ish arcs.
• Explosive Melee Attacks (HOTHANDS): every punch is a grenade. Pedestrians will not enjoy this.
• Slidey Cars (SNOWDAY): traffic loses grip and turns every intersection into a bowling alley.
• Drunk Mode (LIQUOR): your character staggers around like it’s 4 a.m. on Vespucci Beach.

Stack two or three of these at once and the city stops making sense in the best way.

Best cheats for exploring Los Santos and Blaine County

• Skyfall (SKYFALL, 1-999-759-3255) drops you high above the map for a freefall. Great for sightseeing, terrible for your knees.
• Give Parachute (SKYDIVE) gives you a way to actually survive that.
• Spawn Buzzard (BUZZOFF) gets you an armed helicopter in seconds. It’s the single most useful vehicle spawn in the game.
• Super Jump (HOPTOIT) and Fast Run (CATCHME) turn on-foot exploration into a parkour session.
• Fast Swim (GOTGILLS) makes the ocean much less of a slog.
• Change Weather (MAKEITRAIN) cycles through sunny, clear, cloudy, smog, foggy, overcast, rain, thunder, light rain and snow. Snow is rare in normal play, so this is the easy way to see it.

Which GTA 5 cheats can you stack?

Two cheats get stronger the more times you enter them. Plenty of players miss this.

Stacked Slow Motion with Moon Gravity is a cinematic combo. Car crashes play out like a nature documentary about very slow, very confused whales.

What can’t GTA 5 cheats do?

Knowing the limits saves you a lot of frustrated re-entering.

There is no money cheat

Trophies and achievements are disabled for the session

Entering any cheat, by any method, disables trophies and achievements until you reload a save or restart the game. Your save file isn’t permanently flagged. The full breakdown, plus a safe backup-save routine, is in GTA 5 cheats and trophies/achievements.

Cheats don’t work in GTA Online

Single-player cheats are Story Mode only. The button combos, console words and phone numbers do nothing in GTA Online. Using mod menus or trainers online is a fast route to a ban and ruins the session for everyone else, so don’t.

Some missions block cheats

Certain story missions disable cheats entirely or ignore specific effects. Wanted-level cheats in particular may not override a mission’s scripted police response, and vehicle spawns can fail in tight spaces or interiors. If a code won’t trigger mid-mission, it’s almost always the mission, not you. Try again in free roam.

Cheat effects don’t persist

Cheats are not saved with your game. Load a save and you start clean. That’s useful when a cheat like Slidey Cars has made driving miserable and you just want it gone.

What are the GTA 5 returning-player vehicles?

Three spawns have no button combo at all:

These came from the returning-player bonus that rewarded people who had played the original PS3 or Xbox 360 release and moved to the enhanced versions. They are available through the phone or PC console on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions. Unlock requirements have shifted over the years, so if a number doesn’t work on your copy, a linked Rockstar account is the usual missing piece. Do GTA 5 cheats work on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S?

Yes. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions use the same button combos and phone numbers as PS4 and Xbox One. Nothing changed for cheats. The PC version received an Enhanced edition alongside the older Legacy build, and both use the same console words. If a code worked on your PS4, it works on your PS5.

Tips from people who cheat a lot

• Use the phone for repeated cheats. Lowering five wanted stars is five quick redials versus fifty button presses.
• Save first, cheat second. Keep a clean save slot you never cheat on, and a separate sandbox save for messing around.
• Spawn aircraft in the open. The Buzzard, Mallard and Duster need clear space. Los Santos International’s runways are perfect.
• Reload to reset. If a pile of toggles has made the game unplayable, loading your last save wipes every active cheat at once.
• Practice the long combos. Skyfall is sixteen inputs. Drill it in our cheat trainer before you embarrass yourself in front of friends.
• Turn toggles off deliberately. Most toggle cheats switch off when entered again, so you don’t have to reload to lose Drunk Mode.

Are GTA 5 cheats the same as mods or trainers?

No. Cheats are built into the game by Rockstar and work on every platform without installing anything. Mods and trainers are third-party software, mostly on PC, that can do far more: money, teleporting, custom cars. They also carry more risk, especially near GTA Online.
