How GTA 4 cheats work

GTA 4 cheats are phone numbers. Instead of button combos or typed words, you pull out Niko Bellic’s cell phone and dial a number, and the cheat kicks in. Because the input is a phone number, every GTA 4 cheat is identical on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. It is the same system in The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, which share the base-game numbers and add a few of their own.

How do you dial a cheat on Niko’s phone?

1. Get into free-roam gameplay. Cheats work while you are on foot or in a vehicle. Avoid dialling in the middle of a cutscene.
2. Bring up the phone. On PS3 and Xbox 360, press Up on the d-pad. On PC, use the phone key in your controls (Up arrow by default, or check your key bindings).
3. Open the keypad. Scroll to the dial pad option on the phone menu and select it.
4. Type the number. Enter all ten digits, for example 482-555-0100. You do not need to type the dashes.
5. Press call. The phone connects, and a message confirms the cheat.

Dialling is slower than tapping a button combo, but it is also far harder to get wrong. If a cheat fails, you almost certainly typed a digit wrong; back out and dial again.

Do GTA 4 cheats disable achievements?

Yes. When you call a cheat number, GTA IV disables achievements and trophies for that session. Two practical rules:

• If you are going for an achievement or trophy, do not dial any cheat in that session.
• If you have used cheats, reload your save (or restart the game to be safe) before you try for one.

Which health cheat should you use?

There are two, and they do slightly different jobs. 482-555-0100 restores health and armor and repairs your current vehicle, which makes it the one to dial mid-chase when your car is smoking. 362-555-0100 restores health and armor and refills your ammo, which makes it the one to dial in a long firefight. Neither is a god mode; you can still die, so redial as needed.

Weapon Set 1 vs Weapon Set 2

Both sets include an RPG. Set 2 (486-555-0100) is the stronger loadout overall, with the Desert Eagle, combat shotgun, carbine rifle and combat sniper. Set 1 (486-555-0150) swaps in the baseball bat, Molotovs, Micro SMG and standard assault rifle, which some players prefer for the Molotovs alone. Dial one, then the other, if you want to compare.

The song information cheat

948-555-0100 is the odd one out. It does not change gameplay at all; it shows the title and artist of the track playing on the radio. It is a genuinely handy tool for tracking down a song you heard on one of Liberty City’s stations.

GTA 4 vehicle spawn numbers

Vehicle cheats spawn the vehicle near Niko. Make sure there is space around you; in a narrow alley the car may appear somewhere awkward.

Notice the patterns: most cars sit on the 227-555-01xx block, both bikes start 625-555, and the Annihilator is 359-555-0100. Once you know the prefixes, the numbers are easy to remember.

Annihilator: the best spawn in the game

The Annihilator is an armed helicopter, which makes it the most powerful thing you can spawn in base GTA IV. It is the quickest way across Liberty City and a serious answer to a five-star wanted level. Spawn it in an open space: a park, a parking lot or a wide street, not under a bridge.

Jetmax needs water

The Jetmax is a speedboat, and it will not appear in a sensible spot unless you are next to water. Walk to a pier, dock or the edge of the river before you dial 938-555-0100. Liberty City is surrounded by water, so you are rarely far from somewhere that works.

Expansion numbers: The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony

The two Episodes from Liberty City add exclusive numbers, mostly for vehicles. The Lost and Damned (Johnny Klebitz) adds bikes and vans like the Hexer, Innovation and Slamvan. The Ballad of Gay Tony (Luis Lopez) goes bigger, with the APC, the Buzzard attack helicopter, a parachute and explosive rounds. Things GTA 4 cheats cannot do

• No money cheat. There is no number that adds cash.
• No god mode. The health cheats refill you; they do not make you invincible.
• No online use. Cheats are for single-player only and do not work in GTA IV’s multiplayer modes.
• No permanent effects. Spawned vehicles and weapons behave like any others; lose them and they are gone.
