How do GTA 5 cheats work on Xbox?
GTA 5 cheats on Xbox are button combos you enter in Story Mode using A, B, X, Y, the bumpers (LB, RB), the triggers (LT, RT) and the d-pad. Xbox 360, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S all use exactly the same combos. Xbox One and Series X|S also support the 1-999 phone cheats, which arrived with the 2014 Xbox One version.

The Xbox 360 version uses the same button combos as every later release but doesn’t have phone cheats. The Duke O’Death, Kraken and Dodo, the three returning-player vehicles, only exist on Xbox One and newer, and they have no button combo, so you must dial them on the phone. The Series X|S version, released in March 2022 alongside the PS5 version, didn’t change any cheats.
One thing to check: if you’re playing the Xbox One version through backward compatibility on a Series X|S, the cheats are still the same. You just don’t get the native Series X|S version’s graphical upgrades.

Why do Xbox players get GTA 5 cheats wrong?
Because half the internet writes GTA cheats in PlayStation buttons, and the Xbox X button is not PlayStation’s Cross. Here is the full translation:

The trap is obvious once you see it: PlayStation Cross looks like an X, but it’s Xbox A. PlayStation Square sits where Xbox X sits. If you follow a PlayStation guide and press Xbox X every time you see “X”, every cheat with Cross or Square in it will fail. Stick to Xbox-notation lists like the ones on this page.

Tips for entering cheats on an Xbox controller
- Pull triggers fully. LT and RT are analog. A light squeeze may not register as a press. Every combo with a trigger in it needs a clean, full pull.
- Use the d-pad, not the stick. Directions in GTA 5 cheats are d-pad only.
- Watch the Elite paddles. If you use an Xbox Elite or a controller with back paddles mapped to face buttons, double-check what each paddle sends. Paddles are fine to use if they’re mapped correctly.
