GTA 3 cheats: what you get

GTA 3 cheats are the original 3D-era Grand Theft Auto codes: button sequences on consoles and typed words on PC that give Claude cash, weapons, a tank, flying cars and plenty of mayhem. GTA III came out on PlayStation 2 in 2001, followed by PC and Xbox, and returned in 2021 as part of The Definitive Edition. The cheats carried over to every version.

The table above lists every GTA III code on your platform. This page focuses on the ones that matter, how to enter them, and a few quirks of a game that is now well over twenty years old.

How do you enter GTA 3 cheats?

PlayStation, Xbox and Switch

1. Get into live gameplay with Claude on foot or in a vehicle.
2. Do not open the pause menu; the game ignores inputs there.
3. Enter the sequence on the d-pad and buttons. Directions are d-pad presses, not stick movements.
4. Look for the confirmation message. No message means a missed input; start over.

On the Definitive Edition, Xbox players use LB, RB, LT and RT for the shoulder inputs. Nintendo Switch players get a different face-button layout; our Definitive Edition cheats hub has the full Switch mapping.

PC

1. Get into gameplay.
2. Type the code, for example GUNSGUNSGUNS. There is no on-screen box.
3. Wait for the confirmation. If nothing happens, type it again carefully.

Spot the pattern

Four of GTA III’s most useful codes share the same backbone: R2, R2, L1, then one variable button, then Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up. Only the fourth input changes:

• R1 in fourth place: full health (GESUNDHEIT)
• L2 in fourth place: full armor (TORTOISE)
• L1 in fourth place: $250,000 (IFIWEREARICHMAN)
• R2 in fourth place: all weapons (GUNSGUNSGUNS)

Learn the backbone once and you have four cheats memorised. The wanted-level pair follows a similar idea: NOPOLICEPLEASE ends Up, Down three times, while MOREPOLICEPLEASE swaps in L1 as the fourth button and ends Left, Right three times.

IFIWEREARICHMAN: the GTA 3 money cheat

GTA III is the only game in the original 3D trilogy with a straight money cheat. IFIWEREARICHMAN adds $250,000 to Claude’s cash every time you enter it, and you can repeat it as often as you like. Vice City dropped the idea entirely (see Vice City’s money situation), and San Andreas folded cash into HESOYAM alongside health and armor.

In practice, money in GTA III buys weapons at Ammu-Nation, pays for resprays when you want the police off your back, and covers hospital and police fees when things go wrong. A few entries of the cheat cover all of that for the whole game.

GIVEUSATANK: the Rhino

GIVEUSATANK drops a Rhino tank next to Claude. It is the strongest vehicle in Liberty City: heavily armored, unbothered by small arms fire, and armed with a main cannon. It is slow off the line and awkward in tight streets, but it turns a five-star wanted level into a sightseeing tour. The button version is one of the easiest long codes to enter thanks to the six Circles (or six B presses on Xbox) at the start.

GUNSGUNSGUNS and the arsenal

GUNSGUNSGUNS gives every weapon at once, and the data notes you can repeat it to top up ammo. Unlike Vice City, which splits its weapons into three themed sets, GTA III hands you the lot in one go. Combine it with TORTOISE before you start a gang war and you will last far longer.

NASTYLIMBSCHEAT turns on gore mode, adding extra dismemberment to combat. It is purely cosmetic and very much in keeping with the early-2000s tone.

GTA 3 PC-only cheats

Two codes have no button sequence in our data and are typed on PC:

ILIKEDRESSINGUP is a fun one: type it repeatedly to keep cycling until Claude looks suitably ridiculous.

Weather and world cheats

GTA III’s weather codes all start L1, L2, R1, R2, R2, R1, L2 and differ only in the final button:

TIMEFLIESWHENYOU speeds up the in-game clock. If you have been playing in the dark for too long, it gets you back to daylight in a hurry.

Chaos cheats and what they break

• BANGBANGBANG blows up every nearby car. It is marked risky because it destroys mission vehicles too.
• ITSALLGOINGMAAAD makes pedestrians riot and fight each other.
• NOBODYLIKESME turns every pedestrian against you.
• WEAPONSFORALL arms the pedestrians, which makes the two cheats above considerably more dangerous.
• ANICESETOFWHEELS makes cars invisible apart from their wheels. Great for laughs, terrible for driving.

As a rule, run chaos cheats on a throwaway save and keep your real progress in a separate slot. Mission-critical characters and vehicles are just as fragile as any other in a riot.

GTA 3 in the Definitive Edition

The 2021 Definitive Edition of GTA III runs on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. The cheat list is the same as the original. A few notes:

• Console sequences are identical; only the button names change by platform.
• PC players type the same words as in the 2002 PC release.
• Using cheats can affect trophies and achievements in the Definitive Edition. If you are hunting completion, keep cheats to a separate save. Our Definitive Edition hub covers this in more detail.

Practise before you play

The tank cheat is twelve inputs; the money and weapon cheats are twelve each too. Muscle memory helps, especially on consoles where a single wrong press resets the attempt.
