GTA Cheat Trainer: Practice Button Combos Before You Play
Practise GTA cheat button combos with your keyboard, an on-screen pad or a real controller. Timed runs, streaks and personal bests to nail every code first try.
Quick answer
The GTA Cheat Trainer lets you rehearse cheat button combos before you enter them in the game. Pick a cheat or go random, then input it with your keyboard (arrow keys for the d-pad, I/J/K/L for the face buttons, Q/E/1/3 for the shoulders), by tapping the on-screen pad, or with a real controller over the Gamepad API. A timer tracks speed, mistakes reset the combo, and streaks and personal bests are saved locally.
Key takeaways
- Three ways to input: keyboard, on-screen pad (click or tap), or a real controller connected through your browser's Gamepad API.
- Keyboard layout mirrors a PlayStation pad: I = Triangle, J = Square, K = Cross, L = Circle, Q = L1, E = R1, 1 = L2, 3 = R2, arrow keys = d-pad.
- Any wrong press resets the combo, exactly like a fumbled cheat in the game, so you learn to be clean, not just fast.
- Streaks and personal bests are stored in your browser so you can track your improvement over time.
- Most GTA combos are built from reusable chunks, so learning the pattern beats memorising 12 to 16 random buttons.

How the GTA Cheat Trainer works
The GTA Cheat Trainer is a practice range for button cheats. You choose a cheat, the trainer shows you the sequence, and you enter it as fast and as cleanly as you can. It is built for the combos in GTA 5, San Andreas, Vice City and GTA III, where a single cheat can run to 12 or even 16 presses and one slip means starting over.
Getting started takes seconds:
- Choose a cheat or hit random. Pick a specific cheat you want to learn, such as the San Andreas jetpack, or let the trainer pick a random one to keep you sharp.
- Choose how you’ll input. Use your keyboard, click or tap the on-screen pad, or connect a real controller.
- Start the timer and enter the combo. The timer runs while you input. Each correct press lights up; a wrong press resets the combo back to the start.
- Build a streak. Every clean run adds to your streak. Fumble one and the streak resets.
- Chase your personal best. Your fastest clean time per cheat and your best streak are saved locally in your browser.
Keyboard controls
The keyboard layout copies the shape of a PlayStation pad, so the face buttons sit in a diamond under your right hand and the shoulders sit under your left.
| Key | PlayStation | Xbox | Switch (Definitive Edition) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arrow keys | D-pad | D-pad | D-pad |
| I | Triangle | Y | X |
| J | Square | X | Y |
| K | Cross | A | B |
| L | Circle | B | A |
| Q | L1 | LB | L |
| E | R1 | RB | R |
| 1 | L2 | LT | ZL |
| 3 | R2 | RT | ZR |
Keep your left fingers on Q, E, 1 and 3, your right hand on I, J, K and L, and reach for the arrow keys only for the directional chunks. It feels odd for a minute, then it becomes fast.
Using a real controller with the Gamepad API
The trainer reads real controllers through the Gamepad API, a standard feature built into modern browsers.
- Connect your controller by USB cable or Bluetooth.
- Open the trainer in your browser.
- Press any button. Browsers only reveal a gamepad after it has been pressed once on the page, so this wakes it up.
- Start a run and input on the controller exactly as you would in the game.
Practising on the pad you actually play with is the best way to train muscle memory, because your thumbs learn the real distances between buttons. If the controller isn’t detected, try a different USB port, re-pair it, or switch browsers.
On-screen pad
No controller and no keyboard? Click or tap the buttons on the on-screen pad. It works on phones and tablets too, which makes it a decent way to drill a combo on the bus before you get home to your console.
Why practise GTA cheats at all?
Because the combos are long and the game is unforgiving. San Andreas’s jetpack and GTA 5’s Skyfall are 16 presses each. Most weapon and health cheats are 12. In the PlayStation-era games, a cheat is recognised only if you hit the exact sequence; a stray press, the analogue stick instead of the d-pad, or too long a pause in the middle and nothing happens, with no error message to tell you why.
Practice fixes three common failures:
- Wrong order. Shoulder buttons are the usual trap: L1 versus L2, R1 versus R2. Drilling makes the difference automatic.
- Losing your place. Long runs of repeated buttons, like Circle, Circle, L1, Circle, Circle, Circle, are easy to miscount under pressure.
- Hesitation. If you’re reading off a phone mid-combo, you slow down and slip. Knowing the combo cold means you can trigger a health cheat in the middle of a five-star shootout.
It also helps in GTA 5, where pulling up a combo during a police chase is the difference between escaping and respawning at the hospital.
How to memorise long cheat codes
Nobody memorises 12 random buttons. Players who know dozens of cheats have learned the patterns. Here is how.
Chunking: break the combo into blocks
Split each combo into groups of three or four. San Andreas’s HESOYAM becomes:
R1, R2, L1 · Cross · Left, Down, Right, Up · Left, Down, Right, Up
That is four chunks, not twelve presses. The two d-pad blocks are a simple clockwise-ish loop you do twice.
Learn the shared prefixes
Rockstar built cheat families from the same opening. In San Andreas and Vice City, health and weapon cheats all start with R1, R2, L1, and the fourth button tells you which cheat it is:
| Game | Cheat | Combo |
|---|---|---|
| San Andreas | Health, Armor & $250,000 | R1, R2, L1, Cross, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up |
| Vice City | Full Health | R1, R2, L1, Circle, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up |
| Vice City | Full Armor | R1, R2, L1, Cross, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up |
| San Andreas / Vice City | Weapon Set 1 | R1, R2, L1, R2, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up |
| San Andreas / Vice City | Weapon Set 2 | R1, R2, L1, R2, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Down, Left |
| San Andreas / Vice City | Weapon Set 3 | R1, R2, L1, R2, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Down, Down |
Learn one and you’ve basically learned six. The three weapon sets differ only in their last two presses. GTA III uses the same idea with R2, R2, L1: add R1 for Full Health, L2 for Full Armor, L1 for $250,000 or R2 for All Weapons, then finish with Left, Down, Right, Up twice.
The weather family
Weather cheats are even neater. In San Andreas and Vice City, every weather combo is R2, Cross, L1, L1, L2, L2, L2 plus one final button: Circle for rain, Cross for fog, Square for overcast, and Down or Triangle for the two sunny settings (they’re swapped between the two games). GTA 5’s MAKEITRAIN, which cycles the weather, is the same seven-press opening ending on Square. Master the prefix once and you control the sky in three games.
Mirror and repeat patterns
Some combos are built from a phrase that repeats. GTA 5’s Skyfall is L1, L2, R1, R2, Left, Right, Left, Right, done twice. San Andreas’s jetpack is L1, L2, R1, R2, Up, Down, Left, Right, done twice. Learn the first half and you already know the whole thing. GTA 5’s two wanted-level cheats are mirrors: Lower Wanted Level is R1, R1, Circle, R2, then Right, Left three times; Raise Wanted Level is the same opening then Left, Right three times.
Say it out loud
It sounds silly, but rhythm works. “Shoulders, then left-right-left-right” for Skyfall, or “two circles, L1, three circles” for the Rhino and Buzzard openings. If you can hum it, you can enter it.
Spaced repetition
Drill a cheat three times in a row, come back the next day and do it again. Your streak counter is a ready-made memory test: if you can hit five clean runs back to back without looking, you’ve got it.
Challenge ideas for the cheat trainer
Once you can enter combos reliably, make it a game:
- The sub-five-second club. Get HESOYAM or Weapon Set 1 under five seconds with zero mistakes.
- Random ten. Hit random mode and try to clear ten cheats in a row without breaking your streak.
- The 16-press gauntlet. Alternate the San Andreas jetpack and GTA 5 Skyfall until you can do both clean back to back.
- Blindfold rounds. Learn a combo, hide the on-screen prompt with your hand, and enter it from memory.
- Platform swap. Learn a cheat on keyboard, then switch to a controller and see if your time holds up. Then try the Xbox labels to see how well you know the pad versus the symbols.
- Couch duel. Two players, one cheat, best of five. Loser has to play the next mission using only the cheat the winner picks in the Cheat Roulette.
Before you take it into the game
A few game-side reminders so your hard-won combos actually fire:
- Enter cheats during normal gameplay, not in a pause menu, cutscene or loading screen.
- Use the d-pad, never the analogue stick, for directions.
- In GTA 5, you can also use the phone numbers or the PC console instead; see how to enter cheats in GTA 5.
- GTA 5 disables trophies and achievements for the session once you cheat, and some San Andreas cheats can break a save if you save afterwards. Check do cheats disable saves in GTA first.
- Cheats are single-player only and do nothing in GTA Online.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use my PlayStation or Xbox controller with the cheat trainer?
Yes. Plug your controller into your computer by USB or pair it over Bluetooth, open the trainer, and press any button so the browser detects it through the Gamepad API. Most modern browsers support standard PlayStation and Xbox controllers this way.
What keyboard keys does the GTA cheat trainer use?
The arrow keys are the d-pad. I is Triangle, J is Square, K is Cross and L is Circle, laid out like the face buttons on a pad. Q is L1, E is R1, 1 is L2 and 3 is R2.
Is this the same as a GTA trainer mod?
No. In GTA modding, a 'trainer' is third-party software that changes the game. This cheat trainer is a practice tool in your browser: it never touches your game files and simply helps you memorise the official button cheats.
Where are my personal bests saved?
Streaks and personal bests are saved in your browser's local storage on the device you use. They are not linked to an account, so clearing site data or switching browsers resets them.
Why does a cheat work in the trainer but fail in the game?
The usual causes are entering it during a cutscene or menu, pressing the analogue stick instead of the d-pad, or a stray input while you move. In GTA 5 the combo must be entered during normal gameplay, and some cheats are blocked in certain missions.
