GTA San Andreas PC Cheats: How to Type Codes (and Why They Fail)

How GTA San Andreas PC cheats work: type codes during gameplay with no console or Enter key. Covers the 2005 release, Definitive Edition, alt codes and typos.

Quick answer

To use GTA San Andreas cheats on PC, load your save, make sure you're in normal gameplay, and type the code on your keyboard, for example HESOYAM. There's no console to open and no Enter key to press. If the code is right, a 'Cheat activated' message appears. The same typing method is used in the original PC release and is the standard way to cheat in The Definitive Edition on PC.

Key takeaways

  • Type PC codes straight into the game while playing; there is no console and no Enter key.
  • A 'Cheat activated' message is the only confirmation you get.
  • Use the letter keys on the main keyboard; the numpad is not used for San Andreas codes.
  • Many cheats have a word version and a scrambled version, and both work on PC.
  • Most failed codes are typos, a paused game or typing while a menu is open.

How do GTA San Andreas PC cheats work?

GTA San Andreas PC cheats work by typing: while you’re playing, you type a string of letters on your keyboard and the game listens for it. There’s no console to open, no command box, no menu and no Enter key. Type HESOYAM while CJ is walking down Grove Street and you’ll get full health, full armor, a repaired vehicle and $250,000 the instant you hit the final M.

That’s very different from GTA V on PC, where you open a console with the tilde key and press Enter (see our GTA 5 PC cheats guide if that’s what you were expecting). San Andreas is old school. The game quietly keeps track of the last keys you pressed and, when they spell a known code, it fires.

How to enter a cheat in GTA San Andreas on PC, step by step

  1. Load a save or start a new game. Cheats can’t be entered from the main menu.
  2. Get into normal gameplay. On foot or in a vehicle is fine. Close the pause menu, the map and any shop or garage screens.
  3. Type the code using the letter keys on your keyboard. For example, AEZAKMI for never wanted.
  4. Look for “Cheat activated” in the top corner of the screen. That message is your only confirmation.
  5. If nothing happens, start again from the first letter. There’s no backspace and no partial credit.

You don’t have to type at a frantic pace, but don’t pause halfway through either. Moving CJ while typing is fine as long as the movement keys don’t land inside the code. If your movement keys are WASD, letters like A, S and D in a code will also move CJ. That’s normal and harmless.

What does “Cheat activated” mean?

“Cheat activated” is the on-screen text San Andreas shows when it recognises a code. If you see it, the effect has been applied, even if it’s not obvious yet. Weather cheats can take a moment to fade in, and traffic cheats only affect cars that spawn after you entered them.

If you don’t see it, the game didn’t register the code. There’s no error message for a wrong code; the game simply ignores keystrokes that don’t match anything.

Letter keys vs numpad: which keys do you use?

San Andreas PC codes are made of letters only, so you type them on the main letter keys. The numpad isn’t used for any San Andreas cheat. Some numpad keys are bound to vehicle controls by default, which is another reason to stay on the letters.

Capitalisation doesn’t matter. The game reads key presses, not characters, so Caps Lock on or off makes no difference. The codes on this page are written in capitals purely so they’re easy to read.

One thing that can matter is your keyboard layout. The codes were designed around a standard QWERTY keyboard. Some players using AZERTY or QWERTZ layouts report that codes only work when they press the keys in the positions they’d occupy on a QWERTY keyboard. If you’re on a non-QWERTY layout and nothing works, try switching your system layout to US English while you play.

Word codes vs scrambled codes on PC

Here’s a San Andreas PC quirk that confuses a lot of players: many cheats have two working codes. One is a readable word or phrase, the other a scrambled string of letters. Both do exactly the same thing on PC.

Effect Easy word code Scrambled code
Spawn Jetpack ROCKETMAN YECGAA
Weapon Set 2 PROFESSIONALSKIT KJKSZPJ
Infinite Ammo FULLCLIP WANRLTW
Clear Wanted Level TURNDOWNTHEHEAT ASNAEB
Six-Star Wanted Level BRINGITON LJSPQK
Spawn Monster Truck MONSTERMASH AGBDLCID
Max Respect WORSHIPME OGXSDAG
Max Sex Appeal HELLOLADIES EHIBXQS

Pick the word versions when they exist. They’re easier to remember and much harder to typo. A few cheats only have scrambled codes, most famously HESOYAM, BAGUVIX and AEZAKMI, and those you just have to learn.

The original 2005 PC version vs the Definitive Edition on PC

San Andreas has been on PC more than once. Cheats behave similarly across them, with a few differences worth knowing.

The original PC release

The original 2005 PC version is the classic typing experience described above. Later PC releases of the original game kept the same keyboard cheat system. Rockstar has re-released and patched the PC version over the years, so if a specific code misbehaves on your copy, check that you’re entering it during normal gameplay before blaming the version.

The Definitive Edition on PC

The Definitive Edition, released in 2021, rebuilt the game in a new engine and changed plenty of things, but the classic codes remain. On PC you type them during gameplay just like the original. If you play the Definitive Edition with a controller and typing doesn’t seem to respond, entering the console-style button sequence on your gamepad is worth a try; the Xbox layout is shown in the table at the top of this page.

The bigger Definitive Edition difference is unlocks: using cheats can prevent achievements from unlocking. Keep a clean save if achievements matter to you. The Definitive Edition cheats hub covers the remaster in more depth.

Common San Andreas PC cheat typos

Most “broken” cheats are actually typos. These are the ones we see most often:

You typed You meant What went wrong
HESOYAN HESOYAM Last letter is M, not N
BAGUVIK BAGUVIX Ends in X
AEZAKIM AEZAKMI The last three are K-M-I
PROFESSIONALKIT PROFESSIONALSKIT There’s an S before KIT
ROCKETMEN ROCKETMAN Singular, one man
TURNDOWNHEAT TURNDOWNTHEHEAT Every word counts, including THE
NATURALTALANT NATURALTALENT Spelled like the English word

Watch out for these near misses too:

  • PROFESSIONALSKIT vs PROFESSIONALKILLER. The first is Weapon Set 2; the second maxes every weapon skill to Hitman level. Both are real, and they do different things.
  • Vice City codes. Vice City codes like PANZER don’t work in San Andreas. The tank here is AIWPRTON.
  • GTA V codes. Words like PAINKILLER belong to GTA V’s console, not San Andreas.

Why else might a PC cheat fail?

If you’re sure the spelling is right, run through this checklist:

  1. Is the game paused or a menu open? Close it and try again.
  2. Did you start typing mid-word? If you pressed a stray key first, the code may still work, but retyping cleanly costs nothing.
  3. Is another program grabbing your keys? Overlays and macro tools can occasionally interfere. Close them and retry.
  4. Is the cheat situational? Vehicle spawns need a bit of open space and may not work in some interiors or during certain missions.
  5. Is it a toggle? Many cheats switch on and off. If you typed it twice, you may have turned it back off.

Tips for cheating safely on PC

PC players have one big advantage: save files are easy to back up. Before a heavy cheat session, copy your save to a separate slot or folder. That way, if you save while a risky cheat is active, you can roll back. Our guide to the San Andreas cheats that ruin your save lists the codes to be careful with, including the two that freeze the clock.

It also helps to keep a short list of your favourite codes in a notes app, or bookmark the cheat finder so you can search every code without scrolling. For the full list across all platforms, head back to the main GTA San Andreas cheats hub.

San Andreas cheats only affect your own single-player game. They have nothing to do with GTA Online, and this unofficial fan site doesn’t support cheating or modding in any online mode.

Frequently asked questions

Do you press Enter after typing a GTA San Andreas PC cheat?

No. San Andreas PC cheats activate the instant the last letter is typed. There is no console window and no Enter key involved. If you see 'Cheat activated', it worked.

Why is my GTA San Andreas PC cheat not working?

The usual causes are a typo, typing while paused or in a menu, or a keyboard layout that isn't standard QWERTY. Retype the whole code from the first letter during normal gameplay. Also check you're using a code from the San Andreas list and not one from Vice City or GTA V.

Are San Andreas PC cheats case-sensitive?

No. The game reads which keys you press, so you can type the letters without worrying about capitals. Caps Lock on or off makes no difference.

Do the same cheats work in the Definitive Edition on PC?

The Definitive Edition accepts the classic San Andreas codes. On PC the usual method is typing them during gameplay, just like the original. If a code doesn't respond, entering the controller sequence with a connected gamepad is a reasonable fallback to try.

What is the difference between ROCKETMAN and YECGAA?

They are two codes for the same cheat: spawning a jetpack. Many San Andreas PC cheats have a readable word version and a scrambled letter version. Both work on PC, so use whichever is easier to remember.
